Topic: Brain Injury and the Workplace

Speaker: Lauren Holly, Brain Injury Association of Ohio

Lauren is the Executive Director at the Brain Injury Association of Ohio. She has worked in aging and disability services for the last 22 years working across the continuum in a variety of settings. Lauren's career focus has been in developing programming for vulnerable populations to bridge the gap in community resources. She has launched two new adult day centers for individuals with disabilities with unique curriculum emphasizing independent living skill development and community integration. She also created an innovative Makerspace Vocational Program – providing individuals with disabilities an innovative environment to work on vocational skills and earn competitive wages with a person-centered approach. As the Executive Director at the Brain Injury Association of Ohio, Lauren has created new programming for brain injury survivors including development of a wellness workshop series, survivor education series, and a transition backpack program. Her passion for the brain injury community not only comes from her career experience with survivors but also from her own lived experience as caregiver for her own family member who sustained two traumatic brain injuries.

What is the Shelby County Safety Council? The Shelby County Safety Council is a program of the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Division of Safety & Hygiene and the Sidney-Shelby County Chamber of Commerce.

The Division of Safety & Hygiene is funded by a small portion (1%) of employer Workers’ Compensation premiums. The funding provides for a number of direct and indirect services available to employers. The goal of the Shelby County Safety Council is to help reduce employers workers’ compensation premiums by enhancing worker safety and health.

Membership in the Shelby County Safety Council enables organizations to take advantage of the savings afforded by eliminating or reducing workplace injuries and illnesses. Participation will show safety leaders how to increase productivity, improve morale and impact their company’s bottom line.

When/Where Does the Council Meet? Monthly meetings are typically held the first Wednesday from 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. at Wilson Health's Professional Building (lower level conference rooms). Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Chamber of Commerce at 937-492-9122 or emailing Dawn Eilert at deilert@sidneyshelbychamber.com two weeks prior to an upcoming meeting. Meeting reminders will be sent to members via email approximately one week prior to event.

What are the Annual Dues? Dues are $120.00 for Sidney-Shelby County Chamber of Commerce members and $250.00 for non-Chamber members. Dues pre-pay meals for one attendee (of company’s choice) to attend all meetings for one year (12 meetings). The Shelby County Safety Council year runs from July 1 of the current year through June 30 of the following year. Guests may attend any meeting at a cost of $10.00 (unless otherwise noted). Checks should be made payable to: Shelby County Safety Council.

Are there requirements? Members are required to fill out a new enrollment form which is returned to the Sidney-Shelby County Chamber of Commerce to be sent on to the Division of Safety & Hygiene.

This council receives funding from the Division of Safety & Hygiene based on the number of companies that attend monthly meetings.

The electrical contracting business was started in 1973 by Dennis Sollmann as a oneman operation and has grown to become one of the leading electrical contracting firms in Southwest Ohio providing industrial, commercial, and residential services.

Jeramie Sollmann purchased the company from his father in 2012 and took on the role as president. Tom Holthaus has been part-owner since 1996 and is currently the executive vice president. Alan Hartke joined ownership in 2022 as vice president of operations.

Topic: Work Opportunity Tax Credit

Speaker: BJ Knutson, Work Opportunity Tax Credit Program Administrator, Office of Workforce Development

WOTC is a federal tax credit program for employers that hire eligible individuals, from identified target groups, who may have return-to-work barriers. This is free money for Ohio employers willing to extend a helping hand to individuals.

The Shelby County Human Resources Council is comprised of Human Resources Professionals whose business is based in Shelby County.

Statements of Mission and Purpose

To establish personal and professional communications between human relations personnel within commerce and industry.
To share growth oriented and problem resolution successes and ideas in “roundtable”.
To provide a forum to address human relations issues and concerns of mutual interest.
To provide training and educational programming to promote sound human relations management.
To conduct and compile a biennial wage and benefits survey for the benefit of Council members.

Meeting Details:

There are monthly meetings on the fourth Thursday of each month at 12:00 Noon (except November and December), typically at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites (if there is a different meeting location, that information will be sent in monthly meeting reminder e-mail). Reservations should be made by calling the Chamber of Commerce at 492-9122 or e-mailing Dawn Eilert at deilert@sidneyshelbychamber.com several days prior to an upcoming meeting (meeting reminders will be sent out via e-mail approximately two weeks prior).
